Seminar: Metropolitan Policing
Purpose:
This class/wiki will provide students with an overview of the Criminal Justice system from the perspectives of small town policing, medium sized city policing, and mega-large urban city policing. Students will focus on issues that are inherent in different sized areas, and on those issues which are shared between the different cities.

ReplyDeleteIs this class 100% online? Have you used wikis before as a discussion board? If so, how have students responded to the use of the wiki?
Are your learners able to contribute personal experiences to the discussion or are there contributions based on readings and research? (I think my question is more about the experience level of your students - are they new to the career field or others with experience who are gaining classroom credits?)
The post-guest speaker class discussions sounds like a great idea for follow-up that may not happen at the time of the presentation. How would you manage that discussion without a wiki? A discussion board? Not do anything? Are students required to post on the wiki? If so, how often? (The link to your rubric won't open.) It seems like this wiki conversation would be a way to encourage reflection upon the guest speaker presentation and allow learners to link the content to their experiences (Fink, 2013).

Anne - I struggled with this assignment. I first tried to develop a new 8 week course, and thought he wanted us to submit lesson plans, etc.I contacted Dr. Kang, and came to the conclusion that I over thought it a bit.
DeleteI then tried to convert a 5 week on the ground class into what the assignment asked for. For purposes of this assignment, I tried to think of the class as an online class. I actually enjoy teaching online classes.
The articles for the reviews were carefully chosen articles that would correspond with specific aspects of the class. The reviews were "due" at certain key times of the class at the end of the week.
The guest speakers were chosen due to their positions with specific agencies. Students would be required to submit a rubric driven review of each speaker.
Each student would also be using their wiki to present their own finding from a site visit to (2) Law enforcement agencies of different size. The wiki would then create the same kind of malleable discussion that we have engaged in for our wikis.
I like the idea for a Wiki in your class, especially given your topic. I assume that one of the most important things in police work is collaboration. By assigning work on this Wiki you are helping the students learn more about the specific subject but also about working together as a whole.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if tying a blog into this would allow the students to reflect on their involvement in the Wiki as a whole, and what they are learning about the topic specifically.
Fred - I like the idea of tying the wiki to a blog. The wiki, (I didn't get as far as describing it in my original post) would be a flowing presentation by each student describing their visit to (2) Law Enforcement agencies, to compare the agencies mission/vision, demographics, and similar/different issues. I didn't get as far as creating the wiki pages or blogs for this assignment.
DeleteGreat plan Professor! The retired police officer in me always leans towards your blog! I enjoy your descriptive style and concise way of stating your case. I too, am normally not as chatty as I am here! I find your plan to be timely and necessary in today's climate I immediately thought, when reading you plan, this would be a wonderful place to create a chronology of community policing with students collaboratively build pages for each perspective (small town, mid size, large urban). I was not able to open your links, so I am not sure you haven't already considered this! I know in my past life, police officers are evidenced based creatures and cannot simply be told something. A chronology may enhance their research skills and also writing skills as well!
ReplyDeleteToni - thanks. I'm not sure what the problem is with those links. They worked when I set the page up. I was trying to load up the wiki with references from other sites. I think that I was seeing it as you have described, using the different group wikis as a way for the students to create/discuss pages for different types/sized LE agencies. The guest speakers that came in to the actual class were awesome; one from a small city in KS, a Captsain from Kansas City, KS and an Area 3 Dep Chief from Chicago PD. In the online version I would have recorded their interviews with me, and posted them for review and discussion, or arranged for a Zoom meeting with the class, and recorded the presentations.
